Explores the history of labor in the US–Mexico borderlands through Tap Dance, Mexican Zapateado, Son Jarocho, Afro Caribbean movement, and live music. This work brings together polyrhythmic movement and an original score to look at the (ongoing) years of systemic exploitation of labor while highlighting the power and joy of collective resistance. Based on farmworker interviews in California, this excerpt honors the sacred hands that feed us and was filmed on a farm with support from Ayudando Latinos a Soñar (ALAS), a non-profit advocacy organization for farmworkers in Half Moon Bay, CA. As performers, we especially feel alive when sharing our energies with others. When that’s taken away, we can’t help but feel our lights dim. How easily we feel our self worth slip when we’re isolated and unable to do whatever we do that makes us feel our fullest selves. This film is about overcoming those feelings together, lacing up, and continuing to do the things that make you happy and who you are. Even if we can’t physically be in the same place, we can all meet each other in that shared space. We hope you keep dancing, keep engaging in whatever gives you life, keep smiling, and continue to fight that slip.
